When it comes to remodeling in Rochester NY, you'd be amazed at some of the things we at Jeff Tallon Enterprises see as professionals. Having worked in the business for more than 15 years, you come to learn which home renovation investments are worth their money and which ones homeowners could really live without. Between aesthetic remodeling projects rather than practical renovations we often advise clients to invest money into renovations that will improve home function and prevent future problems with your home. When it comes to living here in Rochester, one of the very best investments homeowners can make is that of an ice dam prevention system.
What Are Ice Dams?
You've probably seen homes with sheets of ice or massive icicles hanging from the eaves. What you don't see there is damage being done to the shingles, flashing, gutters, decking, and the rest of the roofing system. Ice dams are caused by poorly insulated roof systems. When the heat from inside the home escapes through an un-insulated attic and roof, the snow build up on the roof will melt. The melted water runs down the roof to the eaves, which are colder than the roof, and there the water refreezes as ice. Not only can an icicle dam be created, but a pool of water will quickly form and begin to eat through the shingles and the rest.
What Jeff Tallon Enterprises Can Do About It
Here at Jeff Tallon Enterprises we have been installing Bylin Roof Ice Melt Systems on Rochester roofs for over a decade. These systems are created specifically to focus ice-busting power on the areas of the roof where dams are prone to form. The Bylin system is made of a few basic components:
- The slotted extrusion: This is a fitted holder for the heating cables placed along the eaves of the roof.
- Self-regulating heating cables: A flat cable about half an inch wide is fitted into the slotted extrusion. This cable conducts the heat, which will melt the snow on the eaves and completely prevent the ice dams.
- The RIM cover panel: A smooth piece of copper or aluminum fits over the extrusion and cable. This cover panel serves both aesthetic and practical purposes it looks very clean and beautiful on the roof and also provides for an even distribution of heat over the eaves.
- The control system: Bylin RIM Systems installed on your roof are not only effective ice-busting systems; they are also designed to be energy efficient. There are two options, the ambient and the high efficiency systems, which monitor the temperature and turn on the RIM system for the targeted hours when the eaves are below freezing.
There are, of course, other solutions to ice damming problems as well, from roof vents to better attic insulation. Here at Jeff Tallon Enterprises we are eager to help you get the best system for your roof at the best prices.
